She Persisted

The mantra in this book about thirteen American woman who made a difference is “she persisted.” The illustrations depict each character and some symbols of the things that they did or parts of their lives that were significant. The women that are highlighted are Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Clara Lemlich, Nellie Bly, Virginia Apgar, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, and Sonia Sotomayor.
Many of these women were familiar to me and others were not. Each one of them pushed forward in their career path, in their workplace, in their commitment to the rights of people and justice. This is an inspiring book for both boys and girls. This book could be enjoyed by younger children, but I think that lower elementary children would get the most out of it. I think they might want to find out more about some of these women and what they did.
