Leadership as a Circle of Equals

As leaders we want to be everything for our faculty, students, parents and communities. We want to build a strong culture, lead the best meetings, say the right things and make the brave calls. We want to have all of the patience and none of the reactions. We want only the positive human emotions and none of the stumbles or missteps of negativity. We think having risen into leadership means basically, we must be “better” than everyone else. While this striving for right action and goodness is a noble pursuit that is probably coming from the “right” place, it’s actually presumptuous and prideful. This is not equality. And it certainly doesn’t allow you to bring your authentic self to work. Equality is not just about lifting our community up. It’s also knowing how to lead when we come down to earth in our messy human forms. We will discuss 4 ways the circle of equality levels the playing field whether we like it or not.
