How can I support my students to become more self-directed? This two-part series on the topic of self-directed learning skills will include an overview of key research takeaways and a practical discussion of how to implement and support self-directed learning in the classroom. Part 1 will define self-directed learning and discuss what we already know about how self-directed learning skills develop across childhood and adolescence. Practical discussions around implementation in a Montessori setting will be interspersed throughout the session. Part 2 will review findings from a dissertation study that includes students’ own voices on the development of self-directed learning skills in a Montessori school during a global pandemic. Part 2 will also include practical discussions on how findings from the study can inform strategies to support students’ development of self-directed learning skills in a Montessori setting.
