The Song From Somewhere Else

Written by A. F. Harrold

Illustrated by Levi Pinfold

I’m not a big fan of science fiction and probably wouldn’t have read this book if I had known that it is science fiction. I was happily surprised at how much this book captivated me. There were a few things that stand out for me. One, there is a mystery to the story and I kept going because I wanted to find out the answer to the mystery. Two, it was a story of acceptance, friendship, and making hard decisions. Three, the illustrations were done in shades of gray which added to the eeriness of the story’s plot.

One suggestion that I have for teachers and parents is to read and discuss the decisions that the teens in the book made about bullying. I felt that the issue of bullying that the teens suffered in silence was not explored enough. Also, the main character made several decisions in very threatening situations that could use some group discussions.

Great book. I would definitely recommend this for early teens.
