This is definitely a book for young adults and grown-ups as well. It’s a road-trip story that explores some very contemporary issues about the concept of ‘family’ and the many very real issues that resulted before laws were changed to acknowledge the rights of all families.
When two young sisters are separated after ‘Mama Lacy’s’ death, they embark on an impulsive, middle-of-the-night road trip to fulfill Mama Lacy’s dying wish: to have her ashes spread over the lawn of the last place they were all happy as a family.
Of course, this means stealing Mama Lacy’s ashes and driving hundreds of miles to Asheville, North Carolina. Their adventure takes one disastrous turn after another, but their journey helps them rediscover the bonds that truly make them sisters.
It’s a funny, heart-breaking, and satisfying story for our time.
